A pretty nasty storm rolled through Utah yesterday. 4-8 inches of snow accompanied by a hellacious wind, which together brought white-out conditions. The storm hit around 11:30 am, and by 1:00 pm the roads were shit. The plows hadn’t been out yet, and as anyone who lives in Utah knows, a snowstorm reduces the IQ of most drivers by 50%.
However, amongst all the ass-hattery and douche-baggery of the idiots on the roads, I witnessed one of those simple acts that restores my faith in humanity.
I was on 123rd south heading towards I-15 just past Redwood Road. There’s a long (1/2 mile?) incline in the road around there. On a normal day, it’s barely noticeable, but in a storm like this, it was hard to navigate even in 4WD. There were several cars that had slid off the road, and several more that were spinning their wheels anbd slip-sliding up a few feet and then back a few feet, making no noticeable progress, but trying their damndest to get up the hill, and becoming a hazard to everyone else on the road at the same time.
Amongst this chaos I saw two young men who couldn’t have been more than 18 helping out motorists one by one. Each man was driving a pickup truck, and had a brand new yellow tow strap. They’d drive to the bottom of the hill, hook up a hapless motorist, and then tow them to the top and send them on their way, then return and do it all again. These two men were in their personal vehicles (there were no logos or any other decorations that would lead me to believe otherwise) helping motorists for no other reason than they saw a need and took action.
I don’t know who these two men were, but I thank them for helping me by being an example of service.
